Etsy Love: Halloween

September 16, 2010

Oh Halloween, how you captivate me so! Lately I’ve been spending perhaps a little too much time looking at vintage and handmade Halloween goodies on Etsy. I can’t help it, though! This is the holiday that intrigues and inspires me the most. Here are a few Halloween goodies that have caught my fancy.

What’s In Store for Fall & Winter

September 15, 2010

I have a little less than two weeks left of my summer vacation. I’ve been walking a fine line between making sure I relax and visit my friends while I can, and getting as much Flapper Girl business done while I have unlimited free time. I’m sure my last week of vacation (next week), I will surrender to that little voice in my head that’s saying, “OMG! Work your ass off!” and have one last pedal-to-the-metal production week before the school year kicks off.

The winter line is starting to gel in my head, and I’m very excited! I feel like I’ve finally grasped the best way to plan seasonal lines, after experimenting with it the past three years.

So here’s what I’ve got cooking for winter:

• I’m bringing back a few apron designs from last year and adding one, possibly two new ones.

• There will be two sets of seasonal cupcake picks. One will be a Retro Christmas theme, the other will be a Winter Flapper set.

• There will be two, possibly three winter garland designs. One will be winter-themed and will incorporate silvers, blue, snow, and a saucy flapper on a sled. The other will be Christmas-themed and incorporate vintage photographs and other retro Christmas ephemera. The possible third design is still up in the air. I have a few ideas of what I’d like to do, I just need to see if I can make any of these ideas happen.

• Ribbon, crepe, and paper Flapper Tree Ornaments!

Next week I need to make a run for some supplies to get crackin’ on all these plans, and I’m thrilled in a very geeky sort of way to look at and pick out paper for many of these projects.

Have any of you started thinking about or planning your winter and Xmas crafts? I’d love to hear what your plans are.

Back to the season at hand for a second, I’m super excited to be participating in this year’s Portland Halloween Bazaar! For those of you who are local and adore Halloween, but have never been to this event, I implore you to please check it out. Last year was my first time at this show, and I had an absolute blast. There were so many talented vendors, and so many cool Halloween goodies to oogle over.

I have been nerding out hardcore over making my displays for this event, and I can’t wait to set everything up on the big day. I also have a few lovely Halloween items up my sleeve that will only be available at this event. So mark your calendars now and come out to the Oaks Park Pavillion for some spooky fun on October 10.

In other news, I have a few non-seasonal garland designs brewing in this ol’ noggin’ of mine that I’m jazzed about, and I hope to make them happen soon as well.

Whew! Just for good measure, I’m going to end this post with a very enthusiastic “Booya!”

Monday’s Shop Update

August 7, 2010

Retro Halloween Cat Face
So, after thinking long and hard about how and when to launch my Halloween line this year, I decided that I’m going to launch it in stages throughout the month of August (hey, that’s this month!).

First up will be garlands, and they will be available this upcoming Monday, August 9 in Flapper Girl Boutique.

Halloween Sneak Peek #2

July 30, 2010

Here are a few teaser shots of some of the Halloween garlands I’ve completed. There are still two designs to come. In fact, I’m waiting for one last paper ephemera element to come in the mail before I can complete my Art Deco Witch garland.

I’ve also got a new really awesome non-Halloween garland design completed that I’m going to unveil soon. Stay tuned!

Halloween Sneak Peek #1

July 27, 2010

I’m going to be posting a few teasers this week for my Halloween line. So far, everything is coming along great! I even have plans to make some really awesome brooches made of fabric and paper. I had think about the logistics of making jewelry out of paper first, though, but I think I’ve figured it out. I’m going to do a test run tomorrow and see how it goes. Wish me luck!

In the meantime, a few sneak peeks (with more to come later in the week).

Oh! I also wanted to mention that I stocked the Flapper Girl Boutique with some super cute Vampire Bat coffee cozies.

They are a limited edition, only available through October 31, and are $12 each. However, my Xmas in July Sale is going on right now, so if you want to score one of these cozies for only $10 + FREE SHIPPING, then be sure to do so before the sale ends this Saturday, July 31.

Sorry if you were hoping to get one of these cozies in the golden harvest colorway. I sold the last one on Sunday.

More Vintage Halloween Photos

May 25, 2010

Awhile ago, I made a post about my current search for vintage Halloween photos. The process has been going well, and I’ve even been able to acquire a few really fabulous images. More about those later this summer, though.

Today I want to share some pretty rad photos I’ve found recently, but didn’t purchase because they fell into one of these categories: a) too expensive, b) forever lost when I forgot to place my bid in time, or c) simply not useful for the project I’m planning.

You can click on each image to be taken to its eBay listing. A few of these are still active auctions.

Vintage Halloween Lion Leopard

I see this leopard costume pretty frequently in old Halloween photos on eBay. I love it, and this is the first time I’ve seen the mask and body suit worn together as a whole. The shadow of the mom-figure taking the picture is really great, as is the old house in the background.

Vintage Halloween Party

Even though the auction for this item is over, I still recommend checking out its eBay auction page because the seller posted a few hi-res shots of the various Halloween details in this image. I really covet the Halloween decor!

* * *

Vintage Kids Halloween Costumes

Three great costumes! I love them all for different reasons. The cat is adorable. The Sea Hag scores many enthusiastic WTF-THIS-IS-SO-WEIRD-BUT-SO-AWESOME points. The cowboy is rad, too. I can’t tell if he’s supposed to be a specific culture personality or just a generic cowboy. Anyone recognize this character?

* * *

Vintage Girl with Pumpkin

I think my fondness for this image has a lot to do with the fact that it reminds me of this photo I took of Nattie when she was five. Plus, the hat is super fantastic.

* * *

Halloween Party Skeleton Vintage

The skeleton is pretty damn adorable, and I wish I had that wallpaper in the background.

Vintage Halloween Party

I really dig all the small details of this photo. First, there’s the Halloween decor. That tablecloth is amazing, and I like the skeleton at the top of the image. Then, all three costumes are great too. I especially like that pirate’s ensemble. And that cowgirl is really pretty.

Halloween Update

April 13, 2010

I’ve been steadily acquiring materials for the 2010 Hallowe’en line.

I scored a few spools of awesome Halloween ribbon last week. I’m particularly excited by the possibilities I have with that black and white striped one.

I am also very smitten with the fabric I’ve found for this year’s Hallowe’en apron designs. I will definitely show a sneak peek at some point, but for now I will say that I think these aprons are going to be the best yet.

I still haven’t found any vintage halloween photos awesome enough to purchase, but I continue to hold out hope. Time is still technically on my side, though my main focus over the summer is working on the Hallowe’en line. And really, summer is only three months away.

How’d that happen?

Vintage Halloween Photos

February 9, 2010

Like I mentioned last week, I already have Halloween on the brain. I’ve been looking to purchase some vintage Halloween snapshots to scan and use in paper garlands. I’ve got a few searches saved on eBay, and I’m keeping my eyes peeled at a few key spots around Portland. So far, I haven’t found anything that’s quite what I’m looking for, but since I’m starting my search so early in the year, I’ve got time on my side.

In the meantime, I’m enjoying the hunt! I love old snap shots in general, and it’s always cool to see what life was like in the past. Here are a few cool photos I’ve recently seen on eBay.
