Today’s Adventure: Sauvie Island

geography-of-washington0Today was such a beautiful day in Portland that it would have been a shame to stay inside. So Chas, Nattie, and I headed out to Sauvie Island to explore a bit and hit up Kruger’s Farm for locally grown produce.

We brought the binoculars and were so lucky to see a flock of Goldfinches playing! At first we just saw two chasing each other in the air, then we spotted some in a nearby tree. It was so neat to see them “up close” through the binocular lenses. A few minutes later, we soon realized a whole bunch of them were sitting quietly in the field very close to where we were standing. What a treat!

Nattie and Chas were impressed I knew these pretty yellow birds were Goldfinches, but any person who went to elementary school in Washington could tell you the same thing. I can’t tell you how many times I had to draw Goldfinches in various school reports as a kid.
